Sleepily reading.

Add a comment

I’m supposed to be reading (but what’s new? I’m constantly inundated with things to read for my seminars), but I keep falling asleep. I guess I can only blame myself for that - I didn’t exactly have an early night last night. And I have a cold, too, and they always drain my energy. I also have no voice, and I’m not sure whether that’s due to the cold, or to the shouting in order to be heard in Falmer Bar and The Cube last night. Or a combination of both.

Still, it’s Saturday and I keep thinking it’s Sunday, which means I have an extra day to do my reading.

I apologise for this completely pointless post. It’s just a method of procrastionation. Why is it that I can manage to stay awake when I’m sitting at the computer doing nothing in particular, but as soon as I try to read, my eyelids begin to droop? Psychological reactions, I hate you.

Sloooow.

The internet seems to be going excessively slowly today. I’ve been trying to upload a new Facebook profile picture since before I went to get some breakfast (toast, if you’re interested. And apple juice of course, but that should go without saying), and it’s still ‘Loading’. I get very impatient with slow internet. How I coped with dial up, I have no idea. If I had to go back to using dial up, I’d probably smash the keyboard over my head out of pure boredom.
Though dial up does have the groovy whirring connectingy noise. I can’t explain it any better than that, but if you’ve ever had dial up, you should know what I mean.

This morning, when my alarm went off at 7.45, I stumbled out of bed and over to my alarm clock (I have it on my desk, rather than on my bedside table so that I’m not tempted just to turn the alarm off and go back to sleep) and turned it off. Then I climbed back into bed, thinking ‘well, I can’t have a shower because there won’t be any hot water yet, so I’ll just close my eyes for a few minutes, and then I’ll get up’. Next thing I knew, it was 8.43. And I had a 9am lecture. I dived out of bed, threw on some clothes, scrunched my hair back into a ponytail, shoved my feet into my slip on shoes, grabbed my bag and a mint imperial (no time to clean my teeth) and hurried to Arts C133. Somehow, not only did I make it there on time, I managed to get there early. I have no idea how I did that, but I certainly impressed myself.

The dishes in our kitchen are still piling up. I really don’t want to have to wash them all, but I do have some free time, and if I don’t do the washing, I’ll be eating off the kitchen worktop since I have NO plates left. So I suppose I could go and do that (wash the dishes, that is, not eat off the kitchen worktop). It’s not like the internet is being particularly helpful right now anyway.

I also need to get a better layout for this blog at some point. But I’ll think about that tomorrow (to quote Scarlett O’Hara).

Yes, I know that’s not exactly the most imaginative title, but it covers the topic of this post fairly accurately, so I’m leaving it as is.

So. Let me do a little introduction.

I’m Emma, and I’m posting in this blog because Daniel - who’s the Head Honcho (so to speak) around these 14lines parts - for some reason told me I could/should have a blog on here. Because he’s nice like that =)
I kept a web diary for the entirety of Year 10 (I’m still not sure what spurred me to do that, but I loved doing it for the most part), so maybe this can be a less daily more universityised version of that. Or maybe not. I guess I’ll just play it by ear.

Hmm. Before I start rambling, what else can I add to my introduction?
I’m in my first year of university, studying American Studies … which, before you ask, entails learning about the history, politics, literature and various other elements of America. Well, I say politics, but we haven’t actually done any of that so far. I want to learn about the politics
a) so I can understand The West Wing better
and
b) so I can be impressed by the amount The West Wing has taught me.

Oh, yes, that’s another thing about me; I love American TV. Mainly, but not limited to, crime shows. Though since I’ve been at university I’ve only watched a couple of episodes of TWW and one episode of NCIS. And considering how much TV I used to watch at home, that’s pretty amazing since I’ve been here for a month.
It doesn’t help that my TV doesn’t work, either. The only place in our flat where there’s an aerial point is in the kitchen, and the kitchen aerial socket has the same end as the end coming from my TV. So they don’t fit together. Even if they did, I’d have to sit on the floor to watch the TV, since the aerial lead isn’t long enough to stretch to the table. I have a TV license, too. Guess I could cancel that, really!

Yes, I’m rambling, I know.

More about me? Okay.
I’m an only child, and I come from Cardiff. Yes, in Wales. No, I don’t shag sheep. Honestly. No more frequently than English people do, anyway. I never realised how big a distinction there was between Welsh and English until I came to university. I’m introduced to others as “Emma, she’s Welsh.” Chris (who comes from Cardiff as well … he was my boyfriend, and then he wasn’t, then he was and now he’s not, but we’re friends, and … ah, it’s complicated!) and I get mocked for the way we pronounce ‘tooth’ (contrary to what Daniel says, I do NOT pronounce the word ‘toof’. I’m Welsh, not stupid. And no, the two are not one and the same) and ‘Primark’. We say ‘Pree-mark’. Everyone else says ‘Preye-mark’. Well they should go to Cardiff, and then THEY’D be in the minority. Ha.

I’ve gone on for quite long enough now. If you actually read all that … uh, why?!

‘Til next time (whenever that may be!)
